Exploring Newport Beach: A Sailor's Journey

Five Days in Newport: Adventure Awaits

Join us as we recount our thrilling five-day adventure in Newport Beach, filled with exploration, culinary delights, and unforgettable experiences.

Sailing South

From Paradise Cove to Newport Beach

Our morning began at the serene Paradise Cove, where we indulged in a delightful breakfast (with the exception of my wet clothing) at the area’s sole restaurant. With the usual morning fog slowly lifting, we set sail at 0930 on September 27, leaving the picturesque Malibu coastline in our wake.

A brief stop in Los Angeles allowed us to refuel and prepare for the exciting days ahead in Newport Beach. Lucky for us we had received some local knowledge about the reduced rate for diesel at the janovich’s gas dock in the LA channel saving us at least 1.50 per gallon compared to the prices we saw in San Francisco and surrounding areas.

As we made our way toward Newport, the air buzzed with the excitement of new adventures on the horizon. The shift from the serene cove to the vibrant city was striking, especially as we arrived under the cover of darkness and found ourselves surrounded by lively party boats, eager fishermen, and elegant private yachts navigating the main Newport channel.

Culinary Adventures in Newport

Our taste buds were treated to a culinary tour de force in Newport Beach. From the vibrant flavors of Sancho’s authentic Mexican cuisine to the smoky allure of a traditional BBQ at Old Crow smokehouse, and crispy fried chicken at the Crack Shack each meal was a celebration of taste. We also savored craft beers and French fries along the beachside trail with local live music playing – a perfect companion to our seaside escapades. These delicious dishes were not just meals; they were experiences that enriched our journey.

Exploring Newport on Two Wheels

Adventures on the Bike Trails

Our time in Newport was marked by exhilarating bike rides that took us through some of the most scenic routes the area has to offer. Our first 50 km ride was along the stunning beach trail, where the ocean breeze kept us company as we pedaled past family’s picnicking, beachside restaurants, sunbathers and surfers. The trail offered breathtaking views of the coastline, and we couldn’t resist stopping for a craft beer and some fries to capture the beauty of the ocean and the live music playing on the near by stage. Our second ride took us through the bustling city streets, where we navigated through charming neighborhoods and vibrant local markets. Each turn revealed something new making the journey as delightful as the destination. In addition to our cycling adventures, we embarked on a 20 km walk that took us to the highlight of our stay in Newport – Minnie’s Yatch Surplus where both Alex and I found some great finds and unbeatable prices.

A New Addition to Our Journey

The Suzuki Outboard Saga

As we continued our journey, the need for a reliable outboard for our dinghy became increasingly apparent. Our previous motor had been unreliable since San Francisco, prompting us to seek a temporary solution. In Newport, we found a small 2.5hp Suzuki outboard that seemed perfect for our current needs. The seller was a quirky character, but the deal was too good to pass up. The real adventure began when Alex decided to transport both the Suzuki and a spare outboard back to our boat using his bicycle. It was a sight to behold as he expertly balanced the motors, navigating the busy streets without a hitch. His determination and skill left me in awe, and it’s a story we’ll be telling for years to come. This purchase not only solved our immediate problem but also added a memorable chapter to our sailing adventure.

A Night at Blackies

Unforgettable Moments at the Dive Bar

Known for its laid-back atmosphere and eclectic mix of patrons, Blackies did not disappoint. We spent the evening playing pool and sipping on cold beers. The warmth and hospitality we encountered at Blackies left a lasting impression, reminding us of the incredible people we’ve met along our travels. It’s these interactions that make our adventure truly unforgettable.

Exploring Newport's Inner Harbor

Adventures on the Water

Our time in Newport Beach was filled with exhilarating water adventures. We spent countless hours navigating the inner harbor in our dinghy and on paddle boards. The harbor was bustling with activity, offering a kaleidoscope of sights from gorgeous beach homes with their own personal docks lining the shore to an array of sailboats and powerboats gliding across the water. The floating tiki party boats added a festive flair to the scene, making every moment on the water an exciting experience. We were constantly on the lookout for the next interesting sight, whether it was a group of paddle boarders, the Balboa ferry or a family enjoying a day out on their yacht. The energy and diversity of the harbor made it a highlight of our Newport Beach stay.

Newport Beach: A Historical Overview

Newport Beach has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the early 1900s. Originally a maritime hub, it quickly became a popular destination for tourists and Hollywood stars alike. The development of the Balboa Pavilion in 1906 marked the beginning of its transformation into a bustling resort town. Over the years, Newport Beach has maintained its charm and allure, attracting visitors from around the world with its stunning beaches and vibrant community.

Fun fact: Newport Beach is home to one of the largest small-boat harbors in the world, with over 9,000 boats calling it home. This makes it a paradise for boating enthusiasts and a key location for maritime activities.
