The Allure of Loreto

Loreto is a picturesque town on the Gulf of California, known for its stunning natural beauty and rich history. This hidden treasure in Baja California features the clear waters of Loreto Bay National Park and striking desert landscapes. As the former capital of Las Californias, Loreto is home to key cultural sites like the first Jesuit mission from 1697 and ancient cave paintings. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from exciting water sports to relaxing beach clambakes, making Loreto a perfect destination for both adventure and tranquility.
Sailing Knots
Reef, Bowline, Trucker & Clove Hitch

During our journey from Aqua Verde to Loreto on December 21st Alex showed the boys some handy knots that are super useful when you’re out on the water. Â He walked them through the reef knot for tying lines together, the clove hitch for securing to posts, the trucker’s hitch for adjusting loads, and the bowline for making a fixed loop at the end of a rope. Each of these knots has its own purpose, so they’re must-have skills for anyone wanting to stay safe and get around easily on the water.
A Taste of Loreto
Exploring the Town

Anchoring in the rolley, shallow waters (11 ft) just off Loreto’s breakwater, with no marina in sight and only one other sailboat gracing the expansive bay, the area radiates rustic charm that connects visitors with the local fishing community. Inside the breakwater, fishermen and tour operators moor their pangas while locals cast their lines from the rocky shores. Although our stay was brief, we made the most of our visit by taking the dinghy to shore for groceries and to immerse ourselves in the local culture. We began with a tasty lunch at the local brew house, which of course included a generous plate of fries which are hard to come by in the smaller villages we visit. Â After satisfying our appetites, we wandered through the picturesque streets, explored markets and historical sites, checked out the fishing rally happening that day, browsed a couple of marine and hardware stores, and then prepared our boat for the next leg of our journey, where we would be celebrating Christmas.
Next stop: Christmas at Puerto Balandra
As we set our sights on Puerto Balandra, the excitement of spending Christmas Day in such a beautiful setting filled us with anticipation. The tranquil waters and serene landscapes promised a perfect backdrop for our holiday celebrations.

So enjoying following along with your adventures. What a great experience for the boys. Love that Alex is teaching them some useful skills, ones that they can put to use right away. When I worked in the printing business back in the 80’s, one of our clients was Fiesta West, who became Signature Vacations. I remember they put flight and hotel packages for La Paz and Loreto. I haven’t seen anything for those destinations in decades.
Thank you Margaret. It’s so great to have the kids with us and we are all enjoying touring the sites and gorgeous beaches. The kids are being a great help and are good (not so little) sailors to have on board 🙂
