The End of One Chapter—And the Start of the Next

When we first dreamed of this voyage, it felt like something from another life—a wild “what if” that slowly began to take shape. In the months before departure, every spare moment was spent prepping the boat, stocking supplies, plotting routes, and closing the chapter on our busy land-based routines. The air was thick with anticipation. Excitement buzzed through every conversation. And beneath it all was the quiet, thrilling knowledge that soon, we would leave the everyday hustle and bustle behind for an entire year at sea.

For Alex, this wasn’t his first big voyage—he had crossed oceans before. But for me, it was a brand-new leap into the unknown. To experience my very first offshore journey side by side with him made the past year even more extraordinary. We faced the challenges and triumphs together, learning each other’s rhythms at sea and celebrating every milestone as a team.

We set sail from Vancouver on August 18, 2024, hearts pounding and spirits high. Our first stop was Anacortes, Washington, where we officially checked into the U.S. and enjoyed precious time with family before making our first true leap. Skipping the notoriously rough Oregon coast, we pointed our bow offshore and headed straight for California. Days later, on a foggy morning, the faint silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge emerged through the mist. We could barely see it, but the excitement was electric—sailing into San Francisco Bay for the first time was pure magic, even shrouded in grey.

From there, the foggy, mysterious coast of California guided us into a new rhythm of life. The rugged Channel Islands offered wild beauty, and each anchorage felt like a deep breath for the soul. As we worked our way south, Mexico welcomed us warmly—along with new friendships that quickly became lifelong bonds. We snorkeled in the clear blue waters of the Sea of Cortez, swam with majestic whale sharks, and tasted life at its most vivid.

Then came the great leap—Mexico to Hawaii. Days and nights of nothing but horizon, sky, and sea. It was a crossing that tested us, strengthened us, and filled us with awe. Hawaii gave us some of our most treasured memories: getting married in Waikoloa, watching a volcano erupt against the night sky, hiking to a remote green sand beach, and gliding alongside sea turtles.

The passage from Hawaii to Alaska pushed us again with rough seas and long, restless watches. But Alaska repaid us a hundred times over—with steaming hot springs in the wilderness, towering glaciers, and wildlife that seemed to belong to another world.

Homeward bound, we traced our way through the sacred beauty of Haida Gwaii, the wild anchorages of Desolation Sound, and our favorite coves along the Sunshine Coast. And just like that, we found ourselves back where it all began—forever changed by the miles and moments in between.

In all, we sailed 10,800 nautical miles and logged 647 hours on the engine since leaving Vancouver—a journey we’ll carry in our hearts forever.

We are especially grateful that we could share this adventure with our two boys. Watching them grow, adapt, and embrace each new experience was a joy beyond words, and we hope that somewhere in these thousands of miles, they’ve carried away lessons and memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

While this chapter is complete, it’s far from the end of our story. We’ll keep sailing—on weekends, holidays, and whenever the wind calls. And now we’re dreaming of something new: finding a little piece of land in the Gulf Islands, where we can build a home and keep the ocean at the center of our lives.

To our family, friends, subscribers, and followers—you were the wind in our sails. Your encouragement, kind words, and joy from afar carried us more than you know. We are deeply grateful, endlessly blessed, and beyond excited to see what the next horizon brings.

We return with hundreds of sunsets etched into memory, salt still in our hair, and the sea forever in our hearts. This voyage may have ended—but the adventure continues.

With love and gratitude,

Alex & Heather ⛵️❤️
