An Epic Pacific Adventure

Our Sailing Journey

Our remarkable journey from Mexico to Hawaii aboard SV Inscrutable unfolded over an exhilarating 23 days as we traversed the vast Pacific Ocean. During this adventure, we encountered a captivating array of conditions, ranging from gentle, soothing breezes to powerful winds gusting up to 28 knots. The swells fluctuated between 5 and 10 feet, spaced just right to feel manageable as we rode the following seas. Some days, the motion was akin to a washing machine, making time in the galley a challenge, while on others, the elements harmonized perfectly, allowing us to indulge in baking and relaxation. Most of the time our vessel glided effortlessly on a broad reach, averaging 5.5 knots and occasionally reaching exhilarating speeds of 9 knots as we pursued the wind.

Each day presented new challenges and rewards as we sailed the open sea with determination and awe. The endless horizon and the rhythmic sway of the waves became our constant companions, guiding us ever closer to our destination. This voyage was not merely a test of endurance but also a celebration of the ocean’s beauty and power.

A Warm Welcome in Hilo Bay

Our First Week in Hawaii

Arriving in Hawaii was a dream realized, as we anchored safely in the serene waters of Hilo Bay. Nestled behind the breakwater, we found a tranquil haven, perfect for unwinding after our long journey. The weather has greeted us with open arms, offering sunny skies and temperatures reaching a delightful 30°C.

Our first week was filled with warmth, not just from the sun, but from the incredible people we met. Mau and Pao welcomed us with open hearts, and Kiko with his enthusiasm for Junk Rigs and the many stories of adventure that each one has shared with us has already made our stay unforgettable.

Aloha in Hawaii

During our first week in Hawaii, we were fortunate to meet Mau & Pao, whose generosity and warmth have made our visit truly memorable. Their hospitality has been a blessing, offering us a secure spot for our dinghy and inviting us into their lives with open arms.

From providing a ride to Costco, sharing a delicious traditional Peruvian meal, to providing us with fresh produce from their expansive ranch, Mau & Pao have shown us the true spirit of aloha. Their kindness has enriched our journey, and we are grateful for the friendship we have formed.

A New Friendship

We also had the pleasure of meeting Kiko, a fellow sailing enthusiast who shares our passion for the sea. His knowledge and enthusiasm for junk rigs have sparked engaging conversations, and we are eager to learn more from him.

Spending time with Kiko promises to be an exciting part of our Hawaiian adventure. We look forward to many more days of sailing discussions and exploring the island together, deepening our connection with this vibrant community.

Eagerly Awaiting Cash and Logan's Arrival

Since our arrival we have been spending most of our days doing sail repairs and painting the boat. Alex has also been brushing up on his mechanics helping Mau & Pao get their sailboat ready for their journey to French Polynesia at the end of March.  We’re so excited to soak up all the beauty of Hawaii and start exploring all it has to offer once Cash and Logan join us, making this adventure even better. Just thinking about exploring the island together has us buzzing with excitement, whether we’re sailing in those clear blue waters or hunting for hidden gems on land, we know we’re going to make some unforgettable memories together.
