On May 29th, after our rejuvenating visit to the White Sulphur hot springs, where we soaked in the warmth, we raised the anchor and navigated north towards the serene Lisianski Strait, leaving behind the vast Gulf of Alaska.

Each turn of the strait revealed new vistas, from the rugged coastline to the tranquil inlets. The five and half hour journey was not just a passage but an exploration of Alaska’s natural wonders, culminating in the picturesque setting of Elfin Cove.

Our short sojourn in Elfin Cove was a charming pause on our travels, where we wandered the boardwalk and discovered the allure of this hidden village. Engaging conversations with fellow boaters fostered a sense of camaraderie, weaving a rich tapestry of community among explorers.

The general store provided insight into the everyday rhythm of Elfin Cove, filled with necessities and delightful surprises that showcased the ingenuity of its residents. As we prepared to depart, the breathtaking scenery etched a lasting impression, transforming Elfin Cove into a treasured memory of our journey.

Life in Elfin Cove: A Seasonal Transformation

A Glimpse into Elfin Cove's Unique Lifestyle

Elfin Cove is a protected, flask-shaped harbor originally called “Gunkhole” by fishermen anchoring here. It’s safe anchorage and proximity to the Cross Sound and Fairweather fishing grounds made this a natural spot for fish buyers and suppliers.

The community’s roots trace back to the 1920s when Ernie Swanson opened a store, restaurant, and dock, while his wife Ruth’s successful appeal for a post office in 1935 resulted in the name Elfin Cove. The 1940s marked the arrival of John Lowell, another pivotal figure in local fishing, who enhanced the area’s infrastructure with an additional dock, warehouse, and store.

Today, the population is fewer than 10 year-round residents, but can grow to around 200 in the summer with the influx of tourists and seasonal workers. However, as winter descends, the village retreats into solitude, embracing the quiet isolation.

This seasonal ebb and flow defines life here, where the boardwalks connect a close-knit community to the outside world.

Fascinating Facts About Elfin Cove

Elfin Cove is located off Cross Sound on Chichagof Island and has a total area of 26.9 square km, of which 26.4 square km are land and 0.5 square km, or 1.73%, are water.

Once known as Gunkhole, was renamed when a local fisherman’s wife opened the post office and chose the enchanting name it bears today.

This quaint village, nestled on the edge of the harbor, is accessible only by boat or seaplane, adding to its secluded charm.

With a permanent population of fewer than 10 residents, Elfin Cove transforms into a bustling hub during the summer months, attracting fishing boats and adventurous visitors.

The boardwalk, a unique feature of the village, winds along the rocky shoreline, offering picturesque views and a glimpse into the serene lifestyle of its inhabitants.
