Sailing to Bahia de Tortugas

An Epic Voyage to ‘Turtle Bay’

After a couple coffees and a morning snorkel, we set sail from Isla de Cedros on November 1st at 10:20 with SV Paradise Love along side. We enjoyed a day of perfect downwind sailing and serene waters. As we approached Turtle Bay, just before 1700 hours, the wind stayed strong and we cruised into the bay under full sails.  Such a great day on the water.

Good times at anchor

Dinghy Adventures, Happy Hour & More

Our 4 days anchored in Turtle Bay was a combination of relaxation, chores, fun and games. We didn’t leave the boat for the first two days after arriving and took time to get some sanding and prep work done on the boat in anticipation for a fresh coat of paint.

On our third day we decided it was time to stretch our legs and see what the town had to offer.  Our brief trip to shore was an adventure in itself, marked by the challenge of navigating the surf beach landing. The waves were relentless, testing our skills as we maneuvered the dinghy to the sandy shore. Once on shore a furry friend followed us around town and back to the dinghy, even swam out after us, thinking we might have a new crew mate. Maybe it was the dog food we had picked up for Jon’s pups on SV Paradise Love that had the dog swimming after us 😂 Overall it was a pretty chill day for us. We enjoyed happy hour aboard SV Oatmeal Savage and then called it an early night.

On our fourth and last day in Turtle Bay, we had an amazing time on a dinghy adventure scouting out the beaches and touring the bay looking for wrecks to dive. A pod of dolphins decided to join us, swimming right alongside our inflatable – you could reach out and touch them. Their playful antics and graceful moves were just incredible, making it a moment we’ll never forget. Getting up close with these beautiful creatures reminded us of the amazing things the ocean has to offer and how special our sailing trip really is.

We had a board game night with the Oatmeal Savage family aboard SV Inscrutable and we are all looking forward to Cash and Logan joining us in a few weeks time for some more game nights and fun. Thanks Big John Bates for the game.

San Diego to Cabo San Lucas

Baja Haha Rally

As we set forth on our journey, we are fully committed to embracing our own unique pace. Meanwhile, the Baja Haha rally is in full swing with over 130 boats participating. A few of our friends have joined in the festivities, fostering a vibrant atmosphere filled with camaraderie among groups of sailors. There is a possibility that we might cross paths with some familiar faces before we reach Cabo, however, should our routes not align, we eagerly look forward to reuniting with everyone as we come together in Cabo, sharing stories and celebrating our shared experiences.

Passage Highlights

Journey to Bahia Santa Maria

The three-day journey from Bahia de Tortugas to Bahia Santa Maria showcased the sea’s unpredictable beauty. We embarked under clear skies and a gentle 10-15 knot true wind, averaging a steady 6 knots with our main and forward sails fully deployed. On the second evening, shortly after midnight, we found ourselves in a tranquil lull where the wind faded away, allowing us to drift smoothly past a cluster of fishing boats anchored on the sea’s mounds. Although our overnight progress was slow at just 5 nautical miles in 7 hours, the calmness of the ocean provided a soothing respite along our voyage. As we neared Bahia Santa Maria, we were delighted by the sight of a sea turtle gliding effortlessly alongside our vessel, a truly enchanting moment that enriched our day. This passage stands out as one of our most memorable adventures.

Culinary Delights at Sea

Savor the Catch of the Day

Our journey was filled with the amazing taste of fresh fish turned into delicious fish tacos. The Bonito tuna, caught by Alex, stood out as the highlight, delivering a rich and savory flavor that made our time at sea even more enjoyable.
