Sailing Adventures
From Santa Rosa to Anacapa
Join us as we navigate the stunning waters of the Channel Islands, encountering playful dolphins and breathtaking scenery along the way.
A Perfect Morning Departure
We pulled anchor at 0745 on September 25, greeted by a beautiful sunny morning. The water was calm, and the sky was clear, which we had not seen since before our days in San Francisco. The mornings have been foggy until about noon when the sun makes an apperance. As we sailed away from Santa Rosa Island we were met by dolphins dancing around our boat, adding a magical touch to the already stunning scenery.
With the sun rising higher and the water temperature warming up we were in search of a great swimming hole. We charted course for Coches Prietos, an anchorage on the south side of Santa Cruz Island.
It was around noon when we arrived to find the anchorage was already full with others taking refuge at Albert’s Anchorage just next door, everyone having eyes on the wide sandy beach and beautfiul rock formations. Rather than risk squeezing into a crowded bay, we made the decision to continue our journey towards Anacapa Island. Ahead of schedule and with no real time line other than to get to Ensenada, Mexcio by Oct 15th, we felt lucky to have the freedom to alter plans and go with the flow.
Ideal Sailing Conditions
Broad Reach to Anacapa
We enjoyed ideal sailing conditions with a broad reach, propelled by a steady 11 knots of wind. SV Inscrutable maintained an average pace of 5 knots, making for a smooth and enjoyable journey. The wind filled our sails perfectly, allowing us to glide effortlessly over the water.
Anchoring at Anacapa
Arrival and Considerations
We arrived at Anacapa Island at 1530, greeted by the serene beauty of the east fish camp anchorage. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water. Dropping anchor, we were ready for a swim.
The anchorage at Anacapa offered us solitude, as we had the area entirely to ourselves. However, leaving the boat unattended was not an option, given the anchorage’s limited protection. We were aware that the forecast suggested calm conditions for the night, but we remained vigilant, ready to leave at a moment’s notice if the weather changed.
Exploring Anacapa Island
Anacapa Island is a paradise for an abundance of marine life, its shores dotted with fascinating caves that enhance its beauty. The transparent waters reveal an enchanting underwater ecosystem, bustling with fish, spirited sealions, and a myriad of other aquatic creatures. At 19.5 degrees, the water was the warmest we’ve encountered since departing from Vancouver, yet we eagerly put on our gear for a refreshing swim. Later, we crafted a delicious dinner featuring freshly baked bread and hearty meatballs, paired with a glass of wine as we enjoyed an Italian feast before settling in for the night.
A Glimpse into History
Anacapa Island is rich in history, dating back to the Chumash people who once inhabited the area. The island’s name is derived from the Chumash word ‘Anyapax,’ meaning ‘mirage island.’ Over the years, it has been a site for various activities, including ranching and lighthouse operations. Today, it stands as a protected area, preserving its natural beauty and historical significance.

What is the building on anacapa island Heather ?
Hi Susan – I am not 100% sure as we didn’t go to shore but believe it to be part of the old Coast Guard housing or original keepers dwelling.
Love the sails! Good winds guys!
