A Night Under the Stars

Los Frailes to Los Muertos

After a wondeful four days of snorkeling, exploring and hiking we kicked off the next chapter of our journey the evening of November 21, departing from Los Frailes around 22:30. The water was calm, and the sky looked incredible, illuminated by countless stars, creating an unforgettable ambiance as we glided through the tranquil sea.

9 hours later, we dropped anchor at 07:20 on November 22, greeted by the breathtaking beauty of Bahia de Los Muertos. The bay’s pristine waters and golden sand provided a perfect backdrop for our two-day stay, filled with exploration and relaxation.

Tropic of Cancer

As we once again traversed the Tropic of Cancer, it offered a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our journey—our initial crossing took us along the stunning Pacific coast, and now we are immersing ourselves in the vibrant waters of the Sea of Cortez, which continues to draw us northward.

The Tropic of Cancer marks the northernmost latitude on Earth where the sun can be directly overhead at noon. This line is named after the constellation Cancer, which is where the sun was positioned in earlier times. At the summer solstice, around June 21, the sun aligns perfectly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere.

It’s located at approximately 23° 27′ N latitude.

Culinary Delights

Besides the snorkeling, the local cuisine was a highlight of our visit, with two charming restaurants that each offered unique experiences.

Restaurant 1535 was perched right on the beach, where we savored fresh shrimp tostadas, juicy burgers, and a generous side of crispy french fries while soaking in the spectacular view. From our table at the restaurant, it was captivating to watch local fishermen skillfully maneuver their pangas out of the water and up the beach and/or boat ramp, often without the use of trailers.

The second restaurant, Centro de Trenes, a hidden gem nestled up a creek bed closer to the main road, featured a unique double decker train track and a handmade village adorning the second floor, along with shuffleboard and pool tables for added entertainment. The friendly staff and surreal atmosphere contributed to the overall charm.

Unforgettable Moments

We were finishing our meals at Centro de Trenes, enjoying the laid-back vibe alongside a few guys at the bar while music filled the air, and one guy was fully immersed, singing his heart out. I tried to use Shazam to identify the songs but had no luck. Our curiosity got the better of us, so we approached the singer, thinking he might be playing his own favorites. To our surprise, he turned out to be Sully from the band Sullvn. We ended up sharing laughs and stories while vibing to some exclusive tracks from their upcoming album, making the whole experience even more memorable in that incredible atmosphere.

Aquatic Wonders

Exploring the Reef

Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Bahia de Los Muertos was an amazing treat. We anchored our paddle boards just off the reef, allowing us to dive into the vibrant underwater world.

As we paddled along the shoreline for miles, we encountered awe-inspiring mansions perched on the cliffs, leaving us to marvel at who might own these magnificent homes in such a dreamy coastal paradise.

Historical Insights

A Glimpse into the Past and Present

During a short period in the 1920’s, the bay served as a cargo port for off-loading supplies for a nearby silver mining operation. Years later, salt produced in local salt pans were stored in a warehouse near shore before being shipped out to markets. Today, with tourism booming  in the Cape region, Bahia de Los Muertos (Bay of the Dead), also known by developers as Bahia de Los Sueños )Bay of Dreams), is slowly adding small resorts and luxury homes. The area is still a bustling spot for local fishermen.
