Discover the Hidden Gem of Marin County
We continue our journey leaving behind the vivacious energy of San Francisco, navigating through the sparkling waters that lead us to the tranquil and hidden gem of Bolinas, where the pace slows and nature’s beauty unfolds in every direction.
Once anchored, we eagerly launched onto our paddleboards, navigating the surf at Point Reyes while weaving through the surfers. We rode the swells into the serene lagoon, savoring a leisurely paddle that allowed us to observe the local birdlife and spot Stingrays in the shallow and muddy water before making our way into town.
We spent one restful night in the gently rocking bay, and prepared ourselves for the next chapter of our adventure, plotting our course toward the picturesque Pillar Point, eager to discover what lay ahead.
The Allure of Bolinas
Bolinas is not only a haven for those seeking natural beauty and artistic inspiration but also a hub for surfers who embrace the ocean’s waves.
With its secluded atmosphere and picturesque surroundings, the town attracts a diverse community of individuals who value creativity and adventure, making it an ideal destination for both artists and outdoor enthusiasts.
The community is known for its reclusive residents. It is only accessible via unmarked roads; any road sign along State Route 1 that points the way into town has been torn down by local residents, to the point where county officials offered a ballot measure to which the voters responded by stating a preference for no more signs.
Pop Culture
Bolinas’ enigmatic charm is highlighted in the 1981 novel Ecotopia Emerging by Ernest Callenbach, while the 1999 film Wildflowers, featuring Darryl Hannah, showcases some of the area’s stunning scenery.
Additionally, the phrase Radio Free Bolinas can be found on several Y-wing pilot helmets in Return of the Jedi, referencing a pirate radio station founded in 1978 that was ultimately shut down by the FCC after it received a call from San Francisco, more than 10 miles outside its broadcast range. The props were likely adorned with these stickers by the creators, who were probably in the vicinity, enjoying the station while crafting the helmets.
