In search of an extraordinary adventure, we stumbled upon a baseball game, and Alex recalled tales of boats and kayakers that flocked to the cove, eagerly waiting for those spectacular home runs. We decided to relocate SV Inscrutable from the snug Berkeley marina to the shallow waters of McCovey Cove, ready to soak in the excitement of the game.

McCovey Cove, a beloved spot beyond the right field wall of Oracle Park, home to the San Francisco Giants, pays homage to the legendary first baseman Willie McCovey. Its official name is China Basin, but to us, it will always be McCovey Cove.

We paddled through the cove, hoping for a chance to catch a home run ball soaring beyond the Oracle Park walls. There was McCovey Cove Dave, a local legend, out in full force with his buddies who never miss a game. True to his reputation, McCovey Cove Dave was relentless in his pursuit of any stray balls, making it clear that only the toughest could compete in this lively arena.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the atmosphere transformed into a vibrant celebration of baseball culture. Cheers from the crowd resonated across the water, and the excitement was electric. Igniting our passion for the game and the thrill of being so close to the action – It was an unforgettable evening.

Shallow waters at McCovey Cove.  Believe we saw as low as 9ft on the depth sounder at one point, with a 6ft draft, no problem 🙂

Sunrise the morning after the game.
